On June 25, 2026, pioneers of the energy transition from the DACH region were awarded the Energy Transition Award 2026 for their comprehensive range of products and services in the field of sustainable energy solutions at The smarter E Europe in Munich, Europe’s largest alliance of exhibitions for the energy industry. Due to the ongoing portfolio shift by European energy suppliers, the Energy Transition Award has also been opened to additional target markets this year.
Bonn/Munich, June 26, 2026: In the current geopolitical landscape, the reliance on fossil fuels exposes systems to significant vulnerability. Fluctuating and rising energy prices impose substantial economic and social strain, amplifying uncertainty across sectors. Coupled with the accelerating impacts of climate change and growing public demand, there is a growing need for action in terms of energy transition. This shift to renewable energy sources is not merely an environmental imperative—it is essential for ensuring energy security, stabilising prices, and achieving strategic political autonomy. Energy suppliers need to lead this transformation by accelerating the deployment of renewable energy, modernising infrastructure, and guaranteeing a reliable, affordable, and locally resilient energy supply. “Europe’s energy future will be built on renewable energy, flexibility and customer empowerment. At Ekwateur, we believe the transition must remain competitive, non-punitive and accessible to all, with strong customer care and affordable energy solutions that ensure even the most modest households can take part in the decarbonized and digital future”, commented Cristian Montoya, Chief Executive Officer, Ekwateur.
For the 10th consecutive time, EUPD Research and The smarter E Europe, the initiators of the Energy Transition Award, recognise energy suppliers from the DACH region with the Energy Transition Award for their customer-centric offerings in the areas of electricity, heat, mobility, energy efficiency, and energy transition (overall).
After successfully including Denmark, France, and Italy over the past two years, the Energy Transition Award expanded its international reach across further European countries. “Tomorrow’s energy company should not only supply electricity. It should help customers understand, manage and optimise their energy consumption. For us, the green transition is about concrete solutions that make sense for people’s finances, everyday lives and the climate”, stated Anders Millgaard, Chief Executive Officer, Modstrøm Danmark A/S. In 2026, energy suppliers from the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom were for the first time subjected to country-specific analyses to document challenges and achievements, as well as to highlight energy suppliers that support the transformation of the energy system. Norway has one of the cleanest and most flexible energy mixes in Europe and heavily depends on hydropower.
The energy markets in the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom are undergoing a rapid transformation toward renewables. “Eco is the world’s first renewable energy company. We understood the requirement for a low-carbon economy and energy transition before most people in the world. This recognition feels like a reward for 30 years of dedicated movement on any transition across the vertically integrated energy value chain. We operate across energy, transport and food, and more, which are the 3 areas that make up 80% of a person’s carbon footprint. We believe that working with household consumers and businesses to change the world we live in to make it a better place for our future generations is our lifelong responsibility”, said Asif Rehmanwala, Chief Executive Officer, Ecotricity Group Limited.
In panel discussions with representatives from energy suppliers from all participating countries, current challenges and opportunities were discussed during the award ceremony to also promote cross-border knowledge transfer. “Our customers are at the heart of the energy transition. This recognition motivates us to keep delivering innovative and sustainable solutions tailored to their real needs, empowering them with flexible options that create long-term value while accelerating a cleaner and more resilient future”, said Javier Anzola Pérez, Director of Energy and Electricity, Repsol S.A..
“The energy transition is one of the central challenges of our time. For it to be successfully implemented, it is important that the relevant stakeholders—such as energy suppliers—are aware of their role and act accordingly, even if this means venturing into new territory. I congratulate the driving forces behind the energy transition and thank The smarter E Europe for their long-standing joint commitment”, said Markus A.W. Hoehner, Founder and CEO of the EUPD Group.
The results of this year’s analyses show that energy suppliers continue to focus on integrated offerings combining photovoltaics, energy storage solutions, and heating solutions. Furthermore, they highlight a strong emphasis on the use of smart meters, the provision of dynamic tariffs, and a more comprehensive service range in the area of electric mobility. Expanded advisory services offered by leading energy suppliers also enable end consumers to make informed decisions. “With the Energy Transition Award 2026, we recognise these important efforts for the tenth time in the DACH region based on the underlying objective quality model and integrate them into the European dialogue. We are pleased to jointly award future-proof energy suppliers across ten European countries with EUPD Research”, said Horst Dufner, Head of The smarter E Europe.
